About Me

Nicole Bencker, Colie's Crochet - About MeHello and welcome to Colie’s Crochet! I hope you find crochet inspiration here where I market the items I sell in my Etsy shop, patterns that I both find and create, my crochet flubs and in my random thoughts. I love interacting with people who share my passions, so please read, comment, and share!

Me and my family: My name is Nicole. I love being a stay at home mom. It is probably the hardest job I’ve ever had but the most rewarding. I get to see every milestone the children meet, teach them and play with them anytime I want. I have been married to my husband for almost 10 years (and together for 15). While he may not understand it, he is super supportive of my crochet addiction! His job makes it possible for me stay at home with our children which I am so thankful for but with that comes long hours. That helped make my decision to start selling my own crocheted items as his schedule makes it almost impossible for me to get a part-time job. We are both from and raise our children in Nebraska.

Bubby, Colie's Crochet - About MeMy son is 5 years old and in preschool. He loves the camera and modeling for Mom. He’s energetic and has a ton of personality. He’s also allergic to peanuts and tree nuts and I hope to share with you some of our triumphs and trials with that here. My daughter is 2 years old and her personality is really starting to show itself. She is just as energetic as her big brother but has a real stubborn streak. She gets into every bit as much trouble as he does but unlike he does, she really thinks her naughtiness out. And she has no love for the camera. We are also expecting our third child in June of 2014.

Sissy, Colie's Crochet - About Me

Kids and Models, Colie's Crochet - About MeHow I got started: For as far back as I can remember I have been creative and loved drawing, art in pretty much every medium, and working with my hands in general. I learned to crochet when I was about 8 years old from one of my grandmother’s friends who taught me to chain and single crochet. For years I made little blankets for my babies and stuffed animals. As I got into middle and high school, it wasn’t quite as cool and I rarely touched my hooks and yarn until after I had finished college. I needed something to pass all of the extra time I suddenly had on my hands. I mostly made afghans for family members as gifts. With the birth of my second child in the fall of 2011, I became a stay-at-home mom and was struggling to define who I was beyond that. Since the age of 15, I had worked and/or been in school and was either defined by my studies or my job. With the assistance of facebook and pinterest, I found that I was gravitating towards the arts once again. I dabbled in baking, sewing, painting, and other crafty stuff; all things that I love, but the magic passed as quickly as it came on. A year later and after having successfully nursed my daughter for 13 months, I now had more time to work with my hands and I decided to begin an afghan for my mother-in-law for a Christmas present. I remembered why I loved crochet so much. Then it was a hat for my daughter, a few gifts and other items and by Christmas, I thought “Hey, I can do this for other people and maybe even make a little extra income for my growing family!” After Christmas, I went crazy making items to sell and on February 1st, 2013, I opened my Etsy shop.

So who is Colie? Colie is simply a nickname for Nicole. I knew from the start that I wanted my brand to be bright, fun and whimsical and I’ve always loved the nickname Colie. It was the perfect fit when I was trying to figure out a name for my shop.

Enjoy and come back to visit often!
